Thankyou all but this is not my invention I am only following in the tradition of my Mother and her Mother before that! It is a very old home craft made out of neccessity but they have a great deal of charm and feel soooooooo soft and snug under foot! Not made for washing or heavy traffic areas where food may get spilled on them, great for hallways bedrooms and in front of the fireplace though. I am about to begin a new one right from scratch so can share the instructions with pictures when I get started.
METHOD Wash all old clothes first and put like fabric weights with like!! All you need is a good strong crochet hook sharp fabric scissors to cut your old clothing up into 1/2 inch strips, (I have gone electric because of my arthritic fingers). You can use burlap hessian sacking or dute to mark out your pattern on and pull the strips through from the back to the front. I work from center to the outside edge although I do not thimk it matters. If I can afford it I use the product which is sold for hooking wool rugs which has a grid effect on it. I do not join the strips just pull the old end and the new beginning strip through to the front and trim later. |
Ohhhh.. thanks so much for sharing.. can't wait to see the "startup" photos.. I'm itching to try this.
My great grandmother taught me to make rag rugs by weaving on a loom she made.. I was about 9 at the time.. but pretty much remember it all.. |
Thanks so much Gal for the technique!

METHOD (Part Two)
When it is hooked all over I hand stitch a strong fabric backing it to keep things tidy. The best way to clean the rugs is to spot clean and every now and again take out side and give a good shake or beating, (NO NOT VACUUM). Or strips my unravel!!!!! When I put my instructios up with pics you can see how I turn a 5cm hem all around the hessian prior to beginning, there really is nothing to these rugs they are so straight forward and there are so many different variations mine is but one of these! Any one willing to have a go and needs help I am only too happy to help. I would love to see other folk have a try at these. Good Luck Gal |
