Just a "Little" Irish

2 Attachment(s)
Yes ... that's what it is ... Just a "Little" Irish ... a Mini Irish Chain.
My first mini and also my first hand quilting project.

Many thanks!!!!!
to
OKSewGlad and Granny_59 for the inspiration,
to
OKSGlad for coaching me through the process,
and to
NStitchs for the suggestion for the ♥ quilting.

It's not quite small enough for an AAQI Mini as it's 10-1/2"x13-1/4" ... but heck, I had to make a quilt for the quilting rack that I just recently found at 2nd hand store.

And yes, Ladies, you've got me hooked!!!!!!! I foresee many minis in my future!!! :D
(and yes, that's a tiny flange in the border!)

Sew very pretty! You must have a lot of patience to sew such tiny pieces together.

feline fanatic 05-20-2012 05:50 AM

This is sew very cute! So if I figured correctly your 9 patch blocks are only about 2" each??

Edited to add, oh I think they are smaller than that, I just went back and looked at your measurements and counted the squares again. They are more like 1 1/2" each! Wow that is tiny, you need to picture it with something to scale like a pencil or a barbie doll.

Neesie 05-20-2012 05:59 AM

That's so cute!!! Would it qualify as a doll quilt? Dolls come in all sizes. :)

Sewfine 05-20-2012 06:14 AM

Beautiful. Love your quilt stand.

QuiltE 05-20-2012 06:19 AM

Thanks Everyone for your kind comments.
I'll challenge you to do one yourself ... it really wasn't that hard, and it was a whole lot of FUN!!!

ITA dolls come in all sizes!! I don't think there's any official sizes for Doll Quilts or Minis. I referenced AAQI as it has become a standard here on the QB and I admire the ladies who have supported the AAQI effort. I hope that some day the program will spread to other countries, especially here to Canada.

Yes, you figured it out ... each of the yellow squares in the chain finish at 1/2"x1/2"!!

This is BIG work, compared to what
OKSGlad and Granny59 do!!!!!!!!!!!
So I have a long way to go, to catch up to their intricate work!!! :D

mighty 05-20-2012 07:31 AM

Beautiful!!!

oksewglad 05-20-2012 07:56 AM

How darling!! Great job! Of course I counted and surmised it was 1/2" squares:o Did you strip piece the 9P's? Isn't it amazing how much fabric you really need for the pieces as so half of it is in seam allowances? Oh friend you are on a roll and will be whipping up these special little ones left and right.

cjackaitlin 05-20-2012 08:01 AM

You did one great job on this quilt, it won't take you long to catch up to OSKGLAD or Granny 59 you are well on your way.

SouthPStitches 05-20-2012 08:01 AM

Love the quilt and your flowers.

QUILTNMO 05-20-2012 08:25 AM

Yes .... did my tri-sets and then sewed together from there. Yes, a lot fo fabric ... yet it's so rewarding as to how fast I made a quilt top!!! (even though it takes me a long time to finish with the quilting and then the photo op!!!). Thank you Dear Friend for piquing my interest in this area, though I may get too too side tracked at times! :)

Tartan 05-20-2012 08:41 AM

It looks adorable on it's little rack. Nice job on your mini.

dublb 05-20-2012 09:43 AM

OH, QuiltE, It's darlin'! Did ya hand quilt the hearts? So cute! I'd love ta see a close up. My first hand quiltin' had much bigger stitches. Ya did great!

lollygagging 05-20-2012 09:56 AM

Thanks!! ;) Yes ... poke and stab hand quilting for the ♥'s using 2 strands embroidery floss. The back looks horrendous, front not so bad.

JeanieG 05-20-2012 10:56 AM

Oh you must have tons of patience QuiltE. This turned out beautiful! And I thought the FWS Quilt was hard at 6 1/2" squares!!!

JJean 05-20-2012 11:02 AM

Sweet little quilt! Minatures always amaze me. Your's is wonderful!

:D hahahaha!!!! Have I got you fooled!!!!!!! :D
Patient I am not ... though stubborn I am!

It actually wasn't that hard ... strip piecing and some shots of Best Press and away to the races!
And the best part is that it was FUN!!!

OKSGlad ... now that you've got me, hook, line and sinker, you can now go to work on JeanieG!!! :D

Marycumi 05-20-2012 11:05 AM

Thanks!! We can thank NStitchs for those little ♥'s ... she saw it IRL when it was still a FLIMSY and gave me the suggestion for the ♥'s!

Ah so that's how you made those delightful hearts. Great suggestion! Maybe you will see some of this type on some of mine:)

How do you get the back stitches to look somewhat like those on the front? Mine are every which way but!

dublb 05-20-2012 05:29 PM

As I slowly got the courage I started takin' 1 rocking stitch at a time. (With my rocking stitches I have a finger under the quilt & just barely feel the needle come through the fabric then turn it back up. If it comes through far enough ta poke me it came through way too far, & I pull it up. I then use my thumb on top ta control where the needle comes through on top.) When I got good at that I would try 2 rocking stitches at a time then after I got my thimble that fit, I would try 3 then 4 stitches at a time. This slowly progressed over a period of 5 years. Hmmm I might need ta take picts.

PS Try wool batting, It makes hand quilting much easier!

QuiltE 05-20-2012 05:35 PM

Thanks DublB! I get the idea .... I just might end up handquilting all my Minis!

Imagine that! ...
The Ol' Pro, picking up an idea from the New Kid on the Block! I'll look forward to seeing ♥s appearing on your next Mini!

jahaper 05-21-2012 03:08 AM

I couldn't not thank them ... they each had a BIG part in this LITTLE thing!

I like to take my pics outside when I can as I can get better and truer colours for everyone to see. My flowerbeds are just coming to life for this year, though if you stalk me, you'll get some views from last year at different stages, different flowers.

jeanneb52 05-21-2012 04:01 AM

Cute I just love it.
