I'm making this quilt for my niece who's having her first child. I did these wonky log cabin blocks with jungle animal centers, and decided on the layout with rows of matching "banners". But it seemed like it needed to be taller than it was wide. Do you like the striped fabric at the bottom?

nyelphaba 11-05-2012 12:54 PM

I like it. Seems to work just fine. Terrific quilt, lucky baby.

barny 11-05-2012 12:58 PM

I loveit! It actually goes with the zebras at the top. Don't take it off! It goes together perfectly. You are good!

QuiltnNan 11-05-2012 12:59 PM

i like the fabric, but i would have divided it and put some on the top and some on the bottom... it just seems too bottom heavy

cat-on-a-mac 11-05-2012 01:03 PM

Nancy, you know that was my original thought, too, but I just didn't like it. Not sure why. I could make the bottom section smaller ... it's 8.5 inches. I was going to do 6, but that didn't seem like enough.

I also thought of putting a different fabric on the top. I have some fabric that looks like the orange-on-orange of the giraffe (but larger scale).

tlambing 11-05-2012 01:04 PM

I concur,
Maybe take a 1/4 off the bottom and add it to the top to help with the heaviness.

I love the bottom fabric - it looks almost like fringe. I love the whole thing, think it is just darn cute

dogsgod 11-05-2012 01:14 PM

My first thought was to split the stripes between top and bottom to even it out, and maybe even a thin strip of stripes on the sides to "end" it with an irregular border (ie thicker on top and bottom, thin on sides)

OK, here's what that might look like. Better?

maryb119 11-05-2012 02:18 PM

Yes! I like it this way!

tutt 11-05-2012 02:42 PM

I like the first version. It is adorable!!

jojosnana 11-05-2012 02:44 PM

That looks great!

I agree with QuiltnNan. It is a beautiful quilt--very creative, but I would evenly divide the striped fabric. Doesn't have to be on top and bottom, could go on top and bottom of animal border rows too.

I, too, think it needs to be divided in some way. It just looks tacked on to me. Of course, keep in mind I do not have a creative bone in my body!

QUILTNMO 11-05-2012 03:13 PM

yes i like it much better its still a cute quilt

thequilteddove 11-05-2012 03:37 PM

I agree! Even amounts on top & bottom. Great quilt!

Cute quilt and cute fabrics.

Tartan 11-05-2012 03:43 PM

I like the stripe at the bottom and I would appliqué the child's name there. Great top!

piepatch 11-05-2012 03:59 PM

At first I thought the first picture was too bottom heavy, and when I saw the second picture, I liked it better. Then........I went back and looked at the first picture, and find I like them both. Whatever you decide, it will be a great quilt. The design of the quilt is so special, and you have used some really great fabrics and colors that are well balanced, so the finished product will be awesome regardless of any changes made. Nice work too!

kateyb 11-05-2012 04:02 PM

I like the striped fabric on top and bottom. It makes it look finished.

woody 11-05-2012 04:06 PM

I like the striped fabric on the top and the bottom (your second version)
Really cute quilt :)

Just Jan 11-05-2012 04:08 PM

Do you have another row of animals? I think I would leave the animals (Zebras) as the first row, use the stripes for the next-to-last row, then add a row of animals (Monkeys or something) for the last row. It would balance the wide and narrow rows better. I don't care for adding stripes at the top, but it just looks too added on at the bottom and needs a a narrow row of something, preferably animals or jungle print, to finish it. Its a really cute quilt. That's my two cents worth! LOL

Double Ditto for me!

Hope you leave it the first version. It makes it so nicely exotic & goes with the animals on the quilt. Be sure to let us know what you do. I think it is so unique.

I like the thought of another row of animals or something to split the strips! embroidered or applique baby's name!
Awesome quilt! I love the idea and I'm sure I had it first....hahahaha!!!

mucky 11-05-2012 05:16 PM

Yes love it.

i agree, it would look more balanced. Very cute quilt. If you want you can still do that, just cut off half of the bottom stripe and add to the top. :)

Edit: Lots of opinions for the stripe, that will teach me to read it all before I post!!! :)

sengell 11-05-2012 06:58 PM

I like this much better!

loisf 11-05-2012 07:25 PM

Very cute quilt, however you finish it. I love the wonky blocks!

Foxflower 11-05-2012 07:32 PM

I agree about using it on the top and bottom both. I wouldn't use any less than 1/3 of it on the top or it still looks too bottom heavy.

BETTY62 11-05-2012 07:36 PM

Looks great. I love it.

I gotta ditto nan here. I think it needs some of the strip on the tops to balance it out. But The quilt is very pretty.

Sandee 11-05-2012 08:23 PM

I agree with QuiltnNan. Equal stripes top & bottom.

Sandee 11-05-2012 08:24 PM

Forgot to add, very cute quilt! :)

Caroltee 11-05-2012 09:58 PM

Like the 2nd picture...... It looks more balanced.. Hope to see it when you finish

broomstix 11-05-2012 10:05 PM

I lke how you balance out the quilt in the second picture. Beautiful.

roadrunr 11-06-2012 06:01 AM

Very pretty quilt! You did a good job! I like the stropes on the top and bottom better, but I think the stripes on the bottom needs to be less, so that it balances everything out. I also think it would be nice if you had a row of animals with the bottom stripe.

susansomethings 11-06-2012 06:03 AM

Yes I really do!

Toucanlady 11-06-2012 06:09 AM

I like the idea someone had of doing the babies name in applique on the bottom stripe. Then the bottom stripe has a purpose.

JuneBillie 11-06-2012 06:27 AM

I love it's uniqueness just the way it is, but I do love the idea of adding a name on the bottom, and that creating it's special purpose.
