MSQC Won't You Be My Neighbor Quilt

Missouri Star Quilt Co has a tutorial for a house quilt that inspired me to make a housewarming gift for my daughter and her family. I posted the top when I got it done, but here's the completed quilt.

Tutorial here: http://quiltingtutorials.com/all/neighbor-house-quilt/

Here's my original post with fabric, size, etc listed: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...g-t222486.html

The real learning part for me was that when I had no quilting lines in the cream colored sections I was not happy with the quilt. I used Quilter's Dream Poly batting because you only have to quilt every 12" with that batting. So the 10" layer cake house pieces could be left without quilting lines. But ... I didn't like the plain cream sections so quilted some lines in there and I was much happier. So I quilted around each house - across the line between the roof and the house and then those lines in the cream sections. I used a blanket stitch around the houses and a long straight stitch for the rest.

The backing is from Moda's Simple Marks - the same as the houses. This fabric has the best feel to it! I had the pieced backing laying across a chair in my studio when their little boy was visiting. He's five and doesn't usually notice much about what's in there. He walked past that fabric, petted it, and said, "THIS one's really pretty, Grammy!" I hope he remembers that when this finally gets gifted!

Your quilt is so beautiful! What a lovely gift. Just love the houses and all the fabrics. What a happy gift to give!

The embroidered roofs say things like their names, the date and place they met, their wedding date, the various places they've lived, their son's name and birth date, the address of the new house - which had BETTER go through! The bottom row has one roof saying "Wherever we are ..." and another roof saying "we're home." A row of hearts is below that last one. Everything is done by machine.

Beautiful quilt and a neat idea to embroidery the precious information on the quilt. I will be love dearly and may bring some happy tears.

I KNOW what her reaction was when I gave her a baby quilt made from the satin wrap from her wedding dress! I'm expecting the same thing here. :)

Very pretty. I never quilt more than 3-4" apart. No matter what the directions say. I'm too afraid the batting may pull apart after years of washing.

Beautiful quilt! You did a wonderful job on it and the 'extra' quilting you did adds so much to it! I'm sure the family will love it just as your GS does!
