Need opinions please...

I am making a lap quilt for my grandma for Christmas. I just finished the 4 blocks and now I'm unsure what to do... I will be adding 2 borders, which will make it about 58" square. My question is, should I add sashing and cornerstones, or just leave it as it is? Thank you in advance everyone!

Judyth 11-04-2012 10:39 AM

I think sashing would really show off the blocks. I love the color combination.

redquilter 11-04-2012 10:41 AM

Hmmm - I love it the way it is. Great colors! But sashing would work nicely also. Not much help, am I?

MartiMorga 11-04-2012 10:55 AM

I think sashing a corner stones would really work with this. Why dont you just lay it out with, take a picture, without take a picture and look at them periodically.

DogHouseMom 11-04-2012 11:25 AM

Agree with Marti ... lay it out over the fabric you plan on using for the sashing and see how you like it.

angiecub 11-04-2012 11:25 AM

I would sash it with a print fabric with both the yellow and blue in it. This is one of my favorite color combinations, and I love the simplicity of your star blocks.

Whatever way you go you will end up with a lovely quilt.

Either way would be pretty. I am sure your grandmother will love it!

I vote with sashing too, I'd try a blue, yellow print as angiecub said or do a solid blue with yellow cornerstones.

BrendaK 11-04-2012 12:24 PM

Vote for sashing and cornerstones for me. However you decide to do this I am sure that she will love it. You did a good job of the blocks. BrendaK

Truly it would work either way. The question is - do you want it larger than you have already planned? Sashing won't make it all that much bigger. I would go with blue sashing and yellow cornerstones though - if you have enough fabric. A little more to cuddle under is never a bad thing.

LoisM 11-04-2012 12:27 PM

My vote is for blue sashing and yellow corner stones.

alfosa421 11-04-2012 03:30 PM

I would say yes to both washing and cornerstones

Yes sashing please.

ArtsyOne 11-04-2012 03:37 PM

Sashing would really set off the blocks. Great colors!

Diane007 11-04-2012 05:23 PM

I vote for sashing and corner stones....

FabricHeaven 11-04-2012 05:24 PM

I just have to tell you that the stars you made are beautiful. You do lovely work, and I know that whatever you decide it will be perfect. Please post your finished quilt! Can't wait!

Chris Anders 11-04-2012 05:27 PM

I agree lay it out on top of your backing and see what it looks like . I think you will like sashing Very pretty.

Jingle 11-04-2012 07:08 PM

Beautiful blocks, stars look perfect.

HillCountryGal 11-04-2012 07:14 PM

Beautiful work!
Are you going to us a print for the backing? Maybe it could coordinate with the blue, white and yellow.
A very nice gift you are creating!

broomstix 11-04-2012 07:17 PM

i too, vote for sashing ,cornerstone. But it already looks great. you have done a terriffic job on the stars.
she will love it.

Bataplai 11-04-2012 07:40 PM

I'm also voting for sashing and cornerstones.
Beautiful blocks - very nice work!

this is just a suggestion , watch a video on missour star quilt company called the big star

As for borders: how about one narrow gold inner border and then a wider blue border around the outside?
You've done very nice work.

earthwalker 11-04-2012 09:01 PM

Firstly, your blocks are beautifully made. As for sashing and whatnot, well, depends on you and of course Grandma's taste. Try laying the stars over some different fabrics, leave them for a bit (I put them on the dining table and cruise past regularly). Whatever you decide, will be just perfect. Don't forget to show us when you are done....we love pics.:)

BeckyB 11-04-2012 09:05 PM

I too vote for sashing and corner stones! It would also make it large enough for the bed

justflyingin 11-04-2012 09:07 PM

Yes, I agree with the others who said that you did beautiful work. They look great, and I would add blue sashing and yellow cornerstones, probably. (depending on what fabrics I had, of course). It will be nice. Please post when you decide and finish the top! :)

Vanuatu Jill 11-04-2012 09:13 PM

I think sashing would set off the blocks, lay it out and see what it will look like. Your piecing is superb!

Babs194068 11-05-2012 01:49 AM

I like the idea of sashing. It will make it stand out.

QuiltnNan 11-05-2012 05:41 AM

i like it the way it is... but sashing would work well, also.

DebbE 11-05-2012 05:52 AM

Wonderful blocks -- your piecing is very precise and I love your colors. I'd do the sashing in a print that picks up both colors (with a little white, too, if possible), with cornerstones. It would really showcase your blocks. Please post a picture when complete - I can't wait to see the finished quilt!

Scraplady 11-05-2012 06:07 AM

Such nice precise work! I had to smile when you said this was for your grandma. Here we are making quilts for our grandmothers. Didn't it used to be the other way round? I'm so glad the art of quiltmaking is alive and well again.

And I agree, sashing and cornerstones would really set those stars off. You might even consider using your background fabric for sashing, with either the yellow or blue (or alternate both) for cornerstones. It would make the stars "float". Just a thought.

cindy4857 11-05-2012 08:53 PM

sash it sash it sash it lol. love your blocks, can't wait to see how you finish it off.,
