Opinions please!! this just doesn't look right to me!!

When I put this giant Drunkard Path together, I didn't have enough blocks to make it as big as I'd like to. So, I went into the stash hunting for fabrics that matched because I didn't have any more of these fabrics left. This is the only fabric that came close to the colors. There is just something about it that doesn't set well with me. But, I can't put my finger on it. Is the border too busy? Or is the quilt too busy for the border? Help! What is wrong with it? should I just take the borders off and bind it and call it a lap quilt? Or keep searching for more solid maroon to make the borders? Or, do you think it is okay as is?

what don't you like
I like it.

I like the border and your quilt. You all ready have the maroon drukard path pattern. If you go with a maroon border, I wouldn't in my head, think you see much of the drukard path pattern
I don't love the geometric/modern look of the quilt and the more traditional, floral border. I think a border in the maroon solid would be perfect, or maybe a slightly darker complimentary color - a dark neutral grey?. The quilt is gorgeous!!
I like it!
I like it too.
actually it looks fine. the border is a bit more subdued but the whole is great. I love DP's.
If you have enough of the light coloured fabric left to bind it, try laying a strip of it on the outside edge to see if it connects the border more with the quilt.

Maybe what seems off to you is that the print in the block has a lot of white and your border fabric doesn't have any white. I would audition a narrow white border followed by the floral border and see if that works better. I really like the drunkard's path you have and also like the border but tend to agree that while it looks good it may not be perfect. A lot of good suggestions have been made so you have options to experiment with. Your piecing and curves are perfect, drunkard's path is one of my favorite patterns because there are so many ways to lay it out. Keep us posted as to how you finish up.

i like it the way it is
Maybe a thin (1-2"?)border between the main section and the wider burgundy floral?
I'd chose a white or black. |

The only thing i see is you might need a thin border between the drunkard path and the border. there is nothing to stop the pattern between the two. If you have a color darker than the drunkard path that might wk maybe 1 to 1.5inch piece. Hope that helps

Well, that is the perfect fabric for drunkard's path - my eyes think they are drunk already!
luv it, itlooks awesome
First off, it is a beautiful quilt. You done a fantastic job on it. IMO I think it would stand out more if you put a 2" border of the solid burgundy between the quilt & the flowered border just to frame it in. I think it would make the pattern pop more.
I wouold just lay a couple of other options over that border and see if I found anything I liked better. Good luck!
I like the drunkard's path and the border, but the part that would bother me is the light of the drunkard's path looks like a very stark white and the border fabric looks like it has off white or even tan. I think I would find something that has the white/white in it. I think it would look nice as someone mentioned, a plaid that might pull in a complimentary color.
I think the border disappears next to your blocks. I would suggest a flange or narrow border in black to stand up to the design, then add two borders, 1st 3", 2nd 5". I think a strong light inner and maroon outer with same color binding beyond the initial flange.
Just my opinion - love your fabrics. I HATE TO RUN OUT but sometimes things work out even better that way!! Thank you so much, I can look at others quilts and be more objective than with my own and alway ask for advise. |
I agree with the others... it needs a narrow strip of fabric between the quilt blocks and border.
Try out everything from lights to dark and see what suits your fancy. VERY nice quilt. |
Do you have enough of the white to put a small border before the other border fabric? I think the border fabric is fine but a small white border first would be even better. Your Drunkard's Path blocks are awesome!
It's very pretty, but I tend to lean to what Sarah posted about the floral border and agree that a solid maroon border would suit it better.
I'm thinking that a dark burgundy, narrow border would work. This is a beautiful piece. It works for me just how it is but a stopping point might make the difference. I don't see a white border at all. If you are going from white in the center to off-white in the border.... I think that would be distracting. Solid, or burgundy and black print, for narrow border and binding is my suggestion.
I think it is beautiful, their is nothing wrong with it. You are a marvelous quilter, do not daught yourself for a minute.
The first thing I thought when I read your post and looked at the pics was it needs a narrow inner border in the white...or gray...but then I almost always want and inner border. Then I read on and see lots of others think it needs an inner border though some thing dark and some think light. I would audition both if I had them.

that is so pretty but think I would put a solid border bet. the outside border and the quilt itself.
Think it needs a stopper border between the quilt and the outside border.
Perhaps you could add a 1" border between the pattern and the floral to separate them? Something neutral. Black? Oe a shade in the floral.
I like it the way it is. I might have put a 2" strip of the floral and then a 2" strip of white and then the rest of the floral. I think that would set the DP off.
I think it's fine but if you are unhappy with it you have to decide do you want to change the border.
Your quilt is lovely and very contemporary. I think your border is too small in scale and too traditional. A stripe or the darker grey that was suggested by sarah in brooklyn would compliment the quilt. IMHO
I like the idea of the dark neutral gray instead or maybe a small grey border then a solid maroon.
The colors are great....just not sure about using a floral border on a modern quilt.....just my opinion
I think it looks great. IMHO if you do insert a narrow border in between, I think white or a light color would be too stark of a transition. I would go with a plain, darker color.

I'd like a solid maroon small border then some contemporary print for the outside border. Do you have enough scraps to make some sort of pieced border for the second border? But as I said earlier, I love the quilt and you did a great job on it.
