TADA!!

I finally finished the dreaded Plaid Star Quilt. I have learned very valuable lessons from this that I will share with you (which I am sure that most of you have learned these lessons long ago  )

1. Never do stars in Plaid (especially if it is a Kit – as you will never have enough to match the plaid)

2. If you purchase a kit OPEN it up and make sure that the fabric is cut on the straight of the goods.

3. “Starch” the top and the bottom before quilting.

4. Never stitch in the ditch with variegated thread (it really shows the all the goof ups).

5. Always purchase more backing fabric than you need (I did not have enough for the pockets).

6. Don’t get too stressed – after all this is supposed to be fun!

The bottom line is I am not displeased with the efforts. It is not "perfect" but as this is the first completed one I have done in a long time it looks good on my wall. I did a pocket top and bottom and inserted a finished piece of wood to give the hanging some stability.

RedGarnet - the house is very open and all timber frame inside so Country / Rustic goes well

Beachlady - the hardest thing I found (after I gave up trying to match the plaid  ) was lining the plaids up so that they were reasonably straight and on the sashing trying to keep the gold threads in the center (that way if the edges were not perfect then it would not scream crooked)!

montanaquilter 05-02-2009 10:11 AM

it may not be perfect but who cares?!! I think it looks great from the pix and looks wonderful hanging on your wall. Good job! I hate trying to match up hard material like that too.

mamatobugboo 05-02-2009 10:30 AM

LOVE it!

amma 05-02-2009 11:41 AM

Well, I think it is perfect and if you are in any way, shape or form not happy with your results, you can just send it to me and I will be happy to give it a home.

SaraSewing 05-02-2009 05:27 PM

You did a great job with the plaids. I see what you mean about lining up the sashing - it really paid off!

Bevanger 05-03-2009 05:44 AM

I know you think its "dreaded" but I sure think it turned out FANTASTIC.
GREAT JOB!

omak 05-03-2009 06:08 AM

Well now!
THat is just absolutely IMPRESSIVE!
Just remember: You know more about that quilt than anyone else in the world will EVER know!
You learned some good tips and shared them with us, and that is a good thing! And, you allowed yourself to have some fun! That had to be better than any old pillow fight you could have gotten into, right???
I may be repeating what has been said before I chimed in, but I try to look at the pictures and give my first impression, so pay attention to the repeats among the quilters! Especially the good ones, because those are the truth!
Good job!
And just think! You are smarter today than you were a week ago ... life doesn't get any better than that, does it?

tlrnhi 05-03-2009 06:09 AM

I think you did an awesome job!
Don't listen to those that are willing to take it off your hands. Send it to me! :) :)

Mplsgirl 05-03-2009 07:16 AM

You did good! I would love to see a picture of it farther back so I can see your timber house with it.

Ok Mplsgirl - This is looking at the quilt from the kitchen (looking into the great room). You can see the vertical beams and the beams that support the second floor as well here.

I don't see that it is not perfect. Your efforts came out great.
I have to admit though, you've kind of scared me away from plaid stars!
