These are done with fusible, raw edge applique. Then, I did a blanket stitch with my machine. My fingers don't like handwork even though I love doing it. It's that age thingie... ...if ya know what I mean.

I live your mug rugs. I am, at present , in the process of making 8 mug rugs from her pattern of the bee hive. These are so much fun and great to work on between larger projects..

Yes, if you set your mug on the buttons it would make it uneven. However, there is plenty of room to set it aside from the buttons. I just found it too cute to resist using those buttons and the beads in my collection. Maybe that mug rug will have to be for decoration.
