I think the younger set thought they were tacky and renamed them Ugly sweaters. Personally, I love almost all of them!

Agree, the college age came up with the idea and it took off from there.

I didn't see it at first, but the mitten fabric is cut in a sweater shape, thus "Ugly Sweater"
