What can YOU make from 4-patch & ½ square triangles?

For quite a while I’ve been intrigued with the number of blocks that are made from the humble 4-patch and half-square triangle (HST). If you can conquer these two building blocks, you have lots of layout options open to you. And, depending on whether you do a planned placement of fabric for value and color, or go scrappy, all these quilts can look quite different from each other.

Here are some of the patterns I’m aware of, and a link to pictures. Often the same layout has different names, depending on the quilt maker.

What other patterns come from 4 patch and HST? Show a picture or link if you can to help us see what you’re talking about.

We're changing designs in my Quilts of Valor Group and trying to use up extra 4-patches. Here are two in process using the 4-patches and half squares triangles. Both of these will have borders. It's a great combo!

Those look great! The HST adds a lot of movement.

If I can add just a couple of plain patches to the mix of 4-patch and HST, there are these two Scrapaholic quilts I made with different settings -

I really love these quilts, Dunster! I had to study it to isolate the block. Is it a split 9 patch? It looks having a bunch of 4 patches and HSTs ready to go would speed along the construction on this.

Awesome thread! :) I'm preparing to make my first 4-patch and I do have a design on graph paper. It's just straight set but I did the values and that's where pattern and interest will come in. It'll be scrappy but if I run short I can always see what fabric I can get in fat quarters to fill in and keep my value and color placements looking good.

These projects pictured, and the links, will be great for my subsequent quilts as I start to branch out into triangles, set on point, and such. Thanks!
