Help Needed - how to use some squares
I need help in figuring out how to use some squares my friend gave me. I have 34 -- 6inch squares and I would like to make a queen size quilt. I think that would mean I need the quilt to be approximately 90X106. I am still somewhat new to quilting, I have made quilts but I've always followed a pattern, so nothing real involved. How would I come up with the design/layout of the quilt. I have tried to draw it out but frankly I flunk in the pattern making group.:( Can anyone help me. Thanks in advance:p

If you are just using 6" squares all over, they would finish at 5.5". Okay, 5.5" x l6 across would be 88". Then down, 5.5" squares would be 104.5". So 16 squares one way, times 19 squares the other way would come out to be 304 squares. You would have to add a lot of squares to the 34 you mentioned.

Maybe try looking at Jennie Doan's tutorials and patterns for some ideas. Her website is Missouri Star Quilt Company, which you may already know. She does a lot with precuts and since your squares are similar in size to charm packs, 5", you might find something you can use. Maybe just add some yardage with your squares. One I'm thinking of is called Falling Charms, I think. I'm with you, I need a pattern for sure, at the very least just to get started. Good Luck and let us know what you find.
Just wanted to add that most charm packs have about 40 squares, so you have close to one charm pack to work with. |
Ragamuffin, I'm sorry I meant to say the squares will finish at 6", they're 6.5 now. However, I see that my idea probably won't work. I guess I need to re-think this whole thing. See I told you I wasn't good at this. Maybe I can try to find a table runner, lap quilt pattern or make a lot of potholders. I haven't even made potholders before, that's how much of a novice I am. Thank you for you advice.

Thanks Suern3, I should have thought of Missouri Star Quilt. I will go to her site now.:o

34 is an awkward number- about as big as you could go would be five across and six down (30 squares) and that would make it 30 x 36.
Or did you mean to say that your friend gave you more than that? |
No Bearisgray, she only gave me 34.

Mermaid, that's a wonderful idea. I haven't made any for charity so maybe this was meant to be. Thank you:D
