What are these?

I was given some fabric and these were in it. They are made of a very heavy flannel and have 2 layers of fabric on each square so they are very thick. I'm not sure what someone was making, I guess these are the extras. There are 18 plus 4 more squares of just fabric which you see at the bottom of the picture. Each completed piece is 6 1/2" square.

So is there anything I can do with these? I can't imagine sewing them together in the normal way since the corners would have a total of 8 layers of very heavy weight flannel.

Thanks!!

If they are flannel, they would make a nice rag quilt.

Ah, never made one of those. But there are only 18, must be what's left. If they were regular weight, I'd probably make a table runner out of them. But these are so darn heavy....

Could they have been meant for chenille?

I would put matching fabric together and see what you've got. Go from there.

Could you bind them off and use them for coasters.

Dunster probably nailed it. I vote chenille as well.

I don't think chenille...they're only 6 1/2" squares...I vote for rag look

When I first learned to make rag quilts, I was taught to sew 2 squares of flannel together across the center and unfold them to yield a 2-layer square with both sides showing the right side of the fabric. I'm sure they were for a rag quilt.

Sew them together for a pillow?
