Monofilament (invisible) thread suggestions
 

I have not used monofilament thread in some time and understand it has improved. I'm looking for suggestions as to what brand and material (polyester or nylon) you prefer. Also if there are some that you've had trouble with that would be appreciated too. When I used it years ago it was almost like using fishing line it was so stiff and hard to sew with.

I want to use it for machine quilting on a domestic machine.

I also want to use regular thread in the bobbin so the quilting shows up on the backing. Any suggestions as to what has worked for you there too as far as bobbin thread with invisible on top would be welcomed.

What needle did you use as well please.

I have used Sulky monofilament (polyester) with good success. Not too stiff, sews well etc. Here is an informative article from the board that might be helpful if you haven't already read it:

Although most quilters recommend using polyester invisible thread, I found that my machine (a Juki TL2010Q) definitely did not like it. I switched to nylon invisible thread (Gutermann) and that worked perfectly. I used bottomline thread in the bobbin. I had to lessen top tension quite a lot.

I used the nylon as well on my last project.
Be sure to do a lot of practice on a sandwich first to get the tension right before you work on your project.

I have used MonoPoly from Superior Threads, and Wonder invisible thread from YLI. Both worked well - not at all like the old fish line stuff. MonoPoly is polyester, and Wonder is nylon. I don't recall any differences in how they worked; I didn't have trouble with either.

I used a size 70/10 microtex needle when working with batik, and 75/11 universal with regular quilting cotton. I'm pretty sure my bobbin thread was either Aurifil or Connecting Threads 50 wt cotton.

Definitely make a practice sandwich, and make sure your tension is balanced before starting your quilt. If you tend to quilt at top speed, you may have to slow down.

I've only used MonoPoly from Superior. No problems.

Superior recommends you loosen the tension quite a bit when using mono.

I use Superior's Monopoly and either SoFine #50 or BottomLine in the bobbin with no problems. My biggest problem with the Monopoly is that it's so fine and clear that I have trouble threading the needle!

I also use the invisible thread from Superior threads- it is great to quilt with, not stiff or pokey. The current cone I have from them is Aurifil. Great thread.i do use regular thread in the bobbin

MonoPoly from Superior threads, Schmetz microtex needle on domestic machine with Connecting Threads 50 wt cotton in bobbin (usually). If I need invisible thread in bobbin, this is one time I go with prewound bobbins.

I used Aurifil's invisible thread both in the smoke colour and the clear with aregular thread in the bobbin. It is a nylon thread but never had problems. I took a few classes from Edyta Sitar a few years ago and she was using that so I tried it and my machine liked it and the sewing was very smooth and reliable.
