How to quilt?

2 Attachment(s)
These rabbits are hand appliqued and I"ve quilted around them with matching black thread. I used white thread and did SID around the sashing. There is too much open space, especially for a baby quilt that will be laundered frequently. How do I quilt the open space? I don't want a lot of quilting, just enough to stabilize the blocks.
Thanks!

Cute quilt! If you have already outline stitched the motifs and the sashing, you have a problem with adding more quilting. From what I can see in the pictures, the extra fullness in the blocks is going to limit what you can quilt in them.

Cute rabbits! It looks like you've done a great job so far. I think I would try echo-quilting around the rabbits.

That's exactly the problem. I tried some hand quilting and it's been too long since I've done it. Looked terrible.

Does your machine have any tie tack features? I might do a little almost stitched in place zig zag stitch dotted around the background that would allow you to distribute the fabric and have it puff up between the tacks. Yes it would require a lot of burying the threads after each tie tack but scattered about 3 inches apart in the background might be an idea.

What about little clover plants spotted here and there by embroidery. They could be a little puffy to help settle the blocks.

If you know how to make French knots, you could do a few of those sprinkled around each bunny.

Thanks, everyone. All good ideas. Another thought was radiating lines from the center out. Maybe I'll do a combination, something different for each block!

I like the idea of rays going from the center like a sunburst. That would be really cute and fill in those voids.

Sounds like a good plan, and if you quilt slowly and let the walking foot move all layers together, hopefully you won’t get any pleats or tucks.
