Oh no that pesty thing is back again 8/7/12 I am glad we are all getting smarter about how to get out of it without damage to our computers -- I am just trying to keep up with everyone here on the boards :) Hope you all have a great day

Anyone else receiving this pop up while scanning posts here? I have had it now for three straight days. The only way to get rid of the message is to ctrl/alt/del and close ie.

Have had that several times. My son in law who is a computer systems guru says it's a scam. So I just get out of the program and re-inter. Ran a total clean up on my computer and haven't seen it for a few days.

I had it happen yesterday at work. My Daughter looked at the site the microsoft pop wanted me to click on and she said don't do it the link didn't look right. I don't remember what the address was but it seemed strange. I was on this site. I got a real bad trojan horse virus, computer had to be reset to factory specs and everything re-loaded. That was a couple of months ago. What a pain in the tush. I was on this site too and I clicked on a link someone had put in their post. an adobe update appeared, dumb me clicked on it and that is when it was installed on my computer. I'm not always quick enough to pick up on everything.

Yes, mine has a bad virus right now, one where they want your credit card info! DO NOT GIVE! There is a way to fix it, my son sent me the directions and my brother is gonna fix it for me. It's a scam!

Please let us know how to fix this as it cost us $'s the other week to get rid of it. We did the ctrl/Alt/Delete but it didn't work.

Next time a popup shows up, hold down Ctrl-Shift-Esc, find the popup listed in the task manager window that comes up, highlight it, and hit "end task". If you just hit the X, it can install the malware on your system.

my own theory is that one of the ads being pushed through the space is infected with adware or spyware.
the techs try to block all pop-ups but this one is particularly annoying and was programmed to elude most defense measures.

when the invisible ad/spyware tries to install itself, our own anti-virus programs prevent it.
mine activates the additional step of temporarily blocking all traffic from the website.
that's why it's necessary to shut down the browser completely to get rid of it.

therefore, it's a "good-news-bad-news" thing. the ad and having to close and restart the browser is a pain in the butt. on the other hand, that's at least proof that our AV programs are protecting our computers. it's also important to remember that the board itself is not infected with a virus. as long as you have good AV software installed on your computer and keep it up to date there's nothing to worry about.

if you know how to take a screen-shot, please do that if you get the false AV notice.
send it by email to [email protected]

they will appreciate any clues we can provide to track down the source and block it.

Well, whatever you call it - has just happened to me again - just turned the computer off, then back on and everything seems to be OK

patricej 08-09-2012 01:52 AM

it isn't necessary to turn your computer off.
just close the browser and wait a few minutes.
