My grandson watched on TV when they were making homemade butter and wanted to do it. Since I don't have a butter churn I told him there were two ways, one in a processer and the other by shaking it in a jar. He wanted to do the jar. As it went thru the different stages I let him taste it and he could see how it would slowly start turning into butter. He was then amazed to know that you make whipped cream the same way. He loved it and was very proud to eat what he'd made.

For Vanilla extract I use vodka and whole vanilla beans.
You take a 12 ounce bottle, add 3 whole vanilla beans (split lengthwise but leave the ends), cover with vodka, shake well and place in a dark spot for about 4 weeks. Shake it at least twice a week.
I have heard some people use bourbon in place of the vodka.
Coconut extract
4 ounces of vodka and 1/3 cup freshly grated coconut. Place in a 1 cup jatr for 7 days, shaking everyday. Strain out solids and store the extract in a dark place for up to a year.
here are some recipes for extracts:

An inexpensive brand of vodka will do, I use Smirnoff.
