I'm sure not one you are seeking, but if you like dates, this is a good one to try.

Chinese Chews
1 pound box brown sugar, light or dark
3 eggs (I've never used egg substitute)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 stick butter ( may substitute margarine) melted and cooled
2 cups plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup chopped pecans
1 box chopped dates

Beat eggs, add brown sugar, vanilla, and melted buter. Then add a little at a time the flour, baking powder, dates, and pecans. Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch pan. Spread batter in pan. Bake 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees. Check center, and if not done, cook longer, Let cool; but into squares. Makes about 30 squares, depending on size square.

Default Date cookies

I have one called Hedgehogs. They have chopped dates, nuts, coconut, brown sugar, and eggs. They are rolled like little logs and rolled in coconut before the are baked. Very good. Look like hedgehogs, thus the name.

I have fond memories as a kid, making the Date Bars boxed mix by General Mills. Several years ago, I contacted the company, to inquire if they still made the mix, and instead, they gave me the recipe. Here it is, it's very good:

DATE BARS
-General Mills

Prepare Date Filling:
Mix 1 package (8 ounces) dates, cut up (about 1 ½ cups), ¾ cup water and 2 Tbsp. sugar in saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 5 minutes. Let cool.

Heat oven 400 degrees. Grease square pan, 9 x 9 x 2.

1 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup margarine or butter, softened
¼ cup shortening
2 cups Bisquick baking mix
1 ½ cups quick cooking oats

Mix brown sugar, margarine and shortening. Mix in baking mix and oats. Press half of the crumbly mixture in pan; spread with filling. Top with remaining crumbly mixture; press gently into filling.

Bake until light brown, 20 to 30 minutes. Cut into bars, makes about 2 dozen.

These all sound good. I might have to experiment with them. June the first one that you posted sounds close. Thanks

You sure brought memories ... and described the "Porcupines" that my Mom used to make!

Here's a recipe that I found online that matches my memory and what I think you are describing ......

I typed in "date-nut" > got a site > clicked on "date nut balls" = http://www.northpole.com/kitchen/cookbook/rec0022.html which seems to have YOUR ingredients...

I also have a recipe from the 1970's or '80's (showing my age, hahaha) called:
COFFEE-DATE SKILLET BALLS made with Raisin Bran. Here goes:

INGREDIENTS:
¾ cup butter or margarine
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 package (8 oz.) chopped dates
2 TBSP MAXWELL HOUSE® Instant Coffee
1 egg, slightly beaten
3 cups POST® Raisin Bran
2 ⅔ cups BAKER'S® ANGEL FLAKE® Coconut
½ cup chopped nuts

DIRECTIONS:
Melt butter in large heavy skillet.
Stir in sugar, dates, and inst. coffee.
Remove from heat and blend in egg.
Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture comes to a full boil.
Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in cereal, 1⅓ cups coconut and nuts.
Let stand 10 minutes.
Shape into 1 inch balls
Roll in remaining coconut.
Makes 5 dozen.
Enjoy!
