I have fond memories as a kid, making the Date Bars boxed mix by General Mills. Several years ago, I contacted the company, to inquire if they still made the mix, and instead, they gave me the recipe. Here it is, it's very good:

DATE BARS
-General Mills

Prepare Date Filling:
Mix 1 package (8 ounces) dates, cut up (about 1 ½ cups), ¾ cup water and 2 Tbsp. sugar in saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 5 minutes. Let cool.

Heat oven 400 degrees. Grease square pan, 9 x 9 x 2.

1 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup margarine or butter, softened
¼ cup shortening
2 cups Bisquick baking mix
1 ½ cups quick cooking oats

Mix brown sugar, margarine and shortening. Mix in baking mix and oats. Press half of the crumbly mixture in pan; spread with filling. Top with remaining crumbly mixture; press gently into filling.

Bake until light brown, 20 to 30 minutes. Cut into bars, makes about 2 dozen.
