Yep, knowing your microwave is the key. They are not all the same. Things that cook in mine at 2 minutes isn't even all that hot in my mom's.

Microwaves are different wattages, thus quicker/slower accordingly.

You'd have to do several batches but this sounds like a good approach for dry, crispy popcorn for popcorn balls.
