I did what you said, check clothes first, quilt top second, then floor (dont forget the chair)
I have found it as far away as about 2 yards...

cut 6 inches wide.
fold in half and press
sew 1 inch seam on wrong side
fold around to front and top stitch
This gives a 1 inch wide binding!

Oops I think I botched the folding part...the very last fold you make must be "in half", like closing a book. That way everything is supported by the handles. It is a very handy handle!
