The Elmers glue for basting that I use is the "school glue" - not a spray. This IS washable and works wonderfully - heat setting (pressing) the binding or pieces - they stay put and I don't mangle my hands with pins.
Was also asked to come back to confirm whether I am using glue for the whole quilt sandwich or just what ... I was referring to 'basting' as holding pieces together - binding, applique, matching seams. I've only ever used the washable school glue, for binding and perfectly placing seams and applique, not sandwiching the layers.
The *bottled*, washable school glue, that's what I use.
