The only difference, in my opinion, has to do with whether water is a threat. Laminate can't take water; it will warp. I have it in my living room/dining room combo and hall and I love it and love the way it looks. (warning though: if you do choose laminate, buy the wide blanks that look beveled and are good quality; we put a cheaper quality in two bedrooms and it's already separating). The only thing I worry about with laminate is if we should get a water leak (roof or hot water heater or large spill).
