I really like this idea! As it is now, it's so random that it "spins" my mind and doesn't show well. Too, add my vote to sashing--white on white might even be nice??. I'd use a piece from one of the blocks for the border. White isn't very practical if the quilt is used frequently. If it is simply for display, white will work.
