My mother always said I was a difficult child who had trouble hearing there was something that couldn't be done. LOL

I think the 401 is one of the best of the genre of complex Singer machines. I pretty much consider this bunch the 319, 306, 401 that basic group. Very good machines but the operating systems are complex. Lots of things to do to get what you want. Once you do get it down pat, they do an excellent job.

Say one wanted to thin one's herd for whatever reason. How does one go about figuring out which machine one wants to keep and which ones to move out? If I go by the ones I use, I can thin to about 7 BUT is there another method of thinning?

If it is a 306 put that in the box. You don't need the serial number. Is it a 306 that you are getting?

Oh! thank you so much for the information!
I spent all day yesterday just scrubbing and polishing the cabinet -it's in really good condition and it looks like I can just polish out the faint water rings in the shellac. I spent last night after the kids went to bed, cleaning the inside of the machine and it was REALLY REALLY clean. I couldn't get over how little dust/ lint/ oil residue was in her. Now to decide what to do about the iron.... I
love that Wilcox and Gibbs, BoJangles! What a beauty! Maybe I'll just try cleaning it first to see what they look like. Stove polish sounds like it would be a good choice. Lehmans carries it. I've never heard of Liquid Gold though - do Lowes/ Home Depot carry it?
