I bought a singer 301 in a cabinet with the knee thingie on the right side for $25 and loved it. got overwhelmed with machines and took it out of the cabinet and sold it. the cabinet went to St.Vinnies and I could kick myself. it sure sewed up a storm. I have a FW which is just as good but I goofed selling the 301

It lets you have decorative stitches like the newer machines by changing the cams in the attachment. There are 20 cams I think you have two sets of Red, a set of Blue, and a set of Yellow. All do different stitches.

Billy, I have a 301A that was my mother's. I remember years ago her using the cams and it seemed to shake the jeepers out of the machine. Does using the cams and button holer shake that machine too much or doesn't it do any harm to it? I haven't tried the cams for fear of doing harm to my beloved 310A.

Are they OK to use?

The way I see it if Singer thought it would tear the machine up they would have never made them. Remember back then they were really proud of their company and their reputation. Also they had to compete with the Germans who had the cam stacks and the Japanese who were copying them and including the decorative and multiple stitches in their machines.

It's too bad you don't live around here. there are always 4 or 5 treadle machines on CL -most of them are around or under $100
I hit the jackpot this past Saturday at an estate auction...2 treadle machines on it. No, I only bought one...it is a Montgomery Wards machine in the cabinet and has all the attachments plus the instruction book, some bobbins and a few (old!) Singer sewing machine needles...bought it for $50. It's going to need a new belt. (The other treadle was a Singer, but not in as good shape, and the cabinet was showing signs of wear. Oh, there was also an old hand-crank machine, but part of the throat plate was missing, so the bobbin/shuttle would pop out when the crank was turned. I believe it sold for $3.)

My machine is still riding around in the back of my Jimmy...I need help unloading it. Hopefully my DH and DS can do so tomorrow. Then I'll try to get pics and figure out how to post them...

Wow, what a score!
I got my 301 tan shortbed, in cabinet, at a yard sale for $20, delivered. Sadly, it came with no attachments other than a couple extra bobbins.

It runs great, stitches are awesome. I used it to do my first machine quilting myself. It was a denim/chambray quilt top, and by the time I got the batting and backing, it was a little thick, but my trusty 301 powered right through it all without hesitation.

These machines are definitely worth fixing up and using them.

Hey Billy,

A trivia question please, is that 301 in the picture the same color they are calling taupe on the 221 featherweight? Seems tan in your picture.

Aardie.

PS: How are FL and Lola?
