i wash all fabrics that come into my house. i don't trust them not to shrink, bleed, twist, have bugs or chemical odors. i don't like surprises after the quilt is done.
i like crinkly quilts for sleeping under, but since i don't prewash batting (that comes in a package) that will shrink and pull up the cotton to create the crinkles.
i starch my fabric almost to death, so that when i cut, it lays there as still as a stone. it's actually newer looking than new and much cleaner.
if the fabric is a color i don't trust, which is almost every primary color, i use retayne. i think it's better than color catchers, imo.
i wash, then fold. i don't press until i need that piece. i store in clear plastic containers.
when i die, there will be a million yards of clean fabric in my basement, waiting to be pressed.

You want to be careful of some colors though if you don't prewash, like reds, teals, burgandy's, they usually run. I always bring my fabric home and put it in the laundry basket. I hated to for years but had one run on me and I learned my lesson.
