I was also on an extremley limited budget when I started by holding a cardboard template,I'd traced & cut around with scissors. No reason a person can't do the same, even in these "high tech" days :)
That being said, my basics would be rotary cutter & mat, good thread, seam ripper & a basic 24" Olipfa ruler.I like to have small & larger scissors...so that's a couple more. Good luck & remember your library might have basic quilting books etc.

As I'm becoming exposed/introduced to some of the tools and approaches y'all are using, I find myself wondering, what should I really be investing in to ease my quilting.
But I'm on an extremely limited budget these days, and wanting to ask you all: What are the top five tools (non-electric/electronic) that you feel are absolute musts to have in your "toolbox" for making quilts?

Tell us more about the Simplicity Binding machine. I keep looking, but hate buying another gadget if it's gonna sit unused. Ask me how I know :) How much do you use it?

I have found my DESIGN WALL mat EXTREMELY helpful. Wouldn't know how to do without it (laying things out on the floor is a drag). So great for planning, laying out blocks and Bargello strips, trying out borders, and so on. (They are on sale now from www.ConnectingThreads.com for $15; item #81921.) A BIG thumbs up in my opinion.

I found a small pair of scissors that come to a point sharper than a seam ripper, so they are great for taking out stitches. I get palpitations if I can't find them.
Also my thimble with a ridge on the top, very small needles for handquilting, and my hoop. And a comfy chair.
No rotary cutter or mat for me yet, I am still back in the 60's, lol. If I had one I might have shorter fingers by this time!
