    Hi Everyone,
I'm totally new to this quilting thing. LOL.. But tonight took the bull by the horns and jumped in. Sometime in my life I bought material for what I don't know. Well now I do. I'm going to make a table cloth of 5 inch squares. Each block will be 5" squares of 9, and if I am measuring and figuring correctly my small table will be only 4 blocks. This is more for learning to cut, sew, and be creative. My question to you is this... What would one put on the back? Something like what is used for table runners? Thanks a lot for your help. I really enjoy reading these posts and it has pushed me to try to be a little creative.

My mom used to put a sheet on the back because it was large and in one piece. I am new too so I will watch for the answer.

You can really use whatever fabric you'd like for the backing but I think if it were me, I'd create another pattern and then the runner/tablecloth would be reversible. 2 in 1, less items to store when not in use etc...

I like that idea... Just looked up what a "Jelly Roll" was... That might be an idea for the back... Just strips... What would I want to use on the inside, so you don't feel the bulk of seams?

Thin flanel if you dont want bulk,I get flanel sheets at the goodwill all the time for 2 bucks. I like to use them for backs as well as for batting for summer quilts.

I think flannel for batting for a tablecloth is an excellent idea. I would be sure to wash the flannel first even if you choose not to wash your quilting fabric. You don't want your tablecloth too "crinkly".
