IMHO, I think "sharing/loaning" a pattern should be okay, and different from "Copying", which is against copyright law. So just be up front with the copyright thing and you don't need to come up with excuses that may be upsetting to her.

If you don't want to lose your friend, just buy her a copy as a gift and that would solve the whole situation.

This isn't worth alienating a friend. She doesn't have your same convictions, and likely wouldn't understand them. Just share with her...

I HAVE LOANED AND BORROWED THINGS NUMEROUS TIMES. NOT ONCE HAVE I FELT RESENTFUL IN DOING SO. IN MY GROUP, IT IS CALLED SHARING. NO ONE IS INTENTIONALLY DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL. JUST BEING FRIENDNS. SORRY IF THIS FEELING OFFENDS ANYONE. IT IS NOT MEANT TO. JUST SHARING OUR THOUGHTS.

Well, if you pay taxes, you did buy it! Or a share in it, at least.

I agree with you, Judy, but why are you shouting?

Yep...I have to agree with this. If she shared with me I would feel obligated to share with her. If you don't want to share, then you really shouldn't take her offer to use her equipment.

I agree with this. I have shared many things with my friends and family members. We only use them for our own homes or gifts to family. I don't feel I'm stealing anything from anyone.

Why ruin a friendship over a $12 pattern. I would buy her a copy of the pattern and tell her that I believe in honoring copyrights but wanted her to have a copy since she loved it so much. Hopefully next time she will have the courtesy to buy her own pattern.
