If you don't clip as you go along, they can get tangled up. It's happened when I've forgotten or missed some.

So does mine, but it leaves about 1" and that seems long to me.

i thought you meant piecing threads, then from comments thought quilting threads. then i'm ???, cuz no one would one outside threads hanging.

i never have piecing threads, I use thread dogs.

start sewing on a postage stamp of fabric, then on to the quilt block, and I join several & end up on a thread dog. 3-4 stitches between units & snip that.
