It really depends on the seam you are sewing. If it would be too bulky, then open the seam, otherwise I find it is better to iron to the darker side.

Well, that all depends- I prefer a variety. Take for example when you have sewn several seams then suddenly realize one of them is laying in the opposite direction as the rest. My theory- once I've sewn the layers together-I'm the only one who knows exactly how many mistakes I made. Course if someone feels the need to inspect it and point them all out to me I obviously am speaking to someone who is so insecure they have to put someone elses work down to try and bring theirs up. With that aid- I'm sure their are those who would cringe at the thought of not doing it just so.

I had a pattern that said to open the seems and press, but I usually press to the darkest material.

I must say.. I use to be an open seam presser.. but I bought a book from Eleanor Burns and she presses her very specific for how she needs the blocks to line up. So if you are following a pattern do as pattern says.. otherwise just to be the same all threw the quilt.. so you don't have some one way and some others.. your back should look as nice as your front.. trim and clip where necessary.. neatness is the most important and press as you go.. I love the apposing seams they make the points and the seams line up perfect every time with out much work.. they melt into each other.

You make a good point about insecurity. I've always said, if you want to drive yourself nuts with striving for perfection that's fine, have at it. But let others have their own standards, even if they're not yours, and let them enjoy their own journey without raining on their parade. Applies to a lot of things, not just quilting.

I've done blocks both ways and I like the look of "open" better. I think it is flatter and the block looks "crisper".

depends on the block... most of the time I press to the dark side. sometimes it's open, just depends on the block and what kind of bulk i'd end up with where the seams meet.
