Give her some time. It takes some of us a while to know where/when the "rules" can be bent or totally ignored.

It's a Mariner's Compass pattern that came with the paper pieced pattern on the interfacing. I think it's this one: http://www.quiltknit.com/12469-NT-Ma...rt_p_9218.html
I took a class for it, and had to go home and finish it myself! I live south of Eugene, OR. Would love to meet others in OR!

I agree with you on that one!

On a different note, I like your avatar! I wanted to take a picture of something like it on a Navy base but they wouldn't let us take the picture. Did you use a pattern or is this your original design?

Also where in OR are you? There is a group of us who get together regularly for quilting fun! We even have a retreat the end of Oct you could join us for!

Is she older or younger than you? My sister is older so she knows more.

I'm glad she came to explore and found that there are other ways of doing things than what her instructor told her. Give her time she will find her own shortcuts, styles and makeshift tools to use.

Reminder her the great artists in history had their own style and broke the rules of those who came before them.

Yep, she will figure out that 'breaking the rules' is how new ideas are found!

    I now know that:
I use my rotary cutter improperly.
My bobbin thread is not always the same color as the top thread.
I incorrectly mix my fabrics in the same quilt. ( Joanns, WalMart and LQS) Oh! The horror!!
I sometimes use a sheet for backing.
I sometimes use dishes, lids or whatever instead of proper templates.
I don't really NEED all the rulers I have.
I don't always follow the pattern.
Bless her well meaning heart, I love her dearly but if she says just ONE MORE thing about my methods or lack thereof, I will beat her to death with my stash.
I sent her the link to this board, she will learn much more here from all of you talented folks.
Oh my word!! So sorry !
