Does a resolution to this semantic dispute make an eternal difference? My best friend goes crazy when I call a paper sack a sack instead of a bag. She's from Chicago and so she is to be forgiven for not speaking English!

My advice is to "know what they meant." froggyintexas

It doesn't bother me that they are ignorant. But I don't make quilts for ignorant people. They can't appriciate one. Some simple quilts take over a hundred hours to complete. My time is valuable to me, and if I give a quilt away, I have given a chunk of my time to them. I try to discern who would appreciate a quilt and who would be happy to have a blanket. I woulnd't mind buying them a blanket... I like blankets too.

It would bother me for sure. There's an awful lot of difference between a Quilt and a blanket.

If it is loved and appreciated - I don't care what it is called. So many blankets (quilted or otherwise) are given to those who need and want them. What they are called is immaterial (no pun intended).

I can buy a blanket in the store. I go looking for quilts at yard sales. But when I lay down to sleep, whether I pull a blanket, a quilt or an afghan over me, it's a cover.

It does bother me, and I cant really say why it does. Most of the time I suffer the indignity in silence. I did however teach my children to never refer to a quilt as a blanket.

I believe they take crocheted or knitted afghans as well as fleece blankets. It really doesn't bother me if someone calls my quilt a blanket. They just may not have ever had a quilt.

YES!!! I had given a quilt to SIL's Father, he refered to it as a blanket, I very fast corrected him and said it was a quilt. We laughed and when he told his sister about it she corrected him also, said he should have known it was a quilt. I don't make blankets, they are sold in stores, I make quilts.

Technically - not quilts.

But I'm sure very warmly received by any charitable organization looking to provide coverings/blankets/snuggies/quilts for children.

Seems sort of petty to complain about quilters not getting the "appropriate" recognition when it should be about the kids.

There are plenty of other venues where it would be more worthwhile to point out the distinction between quilts and blankets.
I agree :)

I prefer that my quilts not be called blankets, but some people just don't know any better. :(
