This is the pattern by Carla Brinkman: http://www.quilterswarehouse.com/p-5...ilt-tales.aspx

The pattern uses an octagon center and gives you measurements for 3 different sizes of centers, 3 3/8", 4 5/8" & 6 3/4".

She says the original twisting star block was designed by Marsha McCloskey and notes it appears in the books "100 Pieced Patterns for 8" Quilt Blocks" and "Marsha McCloskey's Block Party." I don't own either book, so I don't know what directions are given in those books. Perhaps like the blocks at the link below?

I might try this variation to avoid using a specific size of octagon. See the lovely blocks one quilter made here:

Sorry, but the snowman is a printed fabric block--I just happened across a yard of the fabric at a local thrift store.

There are lots of cute snowmen to find if you Google it, I'm sure. For example, Google "snowman coloring pages" or "snowman redwork pattern"
