I call all of my crafts hobbies as well as art Wheb I spend big bucks on making a piece of jewelry or a quilt they are both still hobbies as it is something I do in my leisure time. i admitt making a greeting card or scrap book page is more hobby but it is still an art. I consider my altered art a hobby as well as making crafts with kids both hobby and an art for them

NO Way! I refer to my quilting as "THERAPY".

To me a hobby is what you do in your spare time. Therefore I'm going to make house cleaning my hobby and quilting what I have to do. I will have no spare time for my hobby of housecleaning! LOL!!!!

It's my therapy...

I don't think most people mean to trivialize quilting by calling it a hobby. They just don't understand the time, effort and expense involved in making these works of art. Just tell everyone you are a fabric artist! That should get their wheels turning.

Maybe the word "avocation" sounds better?? means the same I think, but it means doing something you really enjoy outside of a full time occupation. I do it because I want to, not because I have to, or receive money for it. Hobby is just a word and much better than some being used these days. :)

I don't have a problem with the word hobby but for me quilting is more than that. I guess I would say it is a passion what makes me who I am as a person. And I do not do mending, I always say to people when they ask me to do mending or repair something, would you ask Picasso to paint your garage? So maybe that means quilting is my art!
