lots of great advice here. your fabric will let you know.
think outside to box. if you think it does not go together,
that is when I am surprised at how well it turned out. better than I planned.

Color isn't as important as value. When looking through patterns pay attention to value -- light, medium, dark -- rather than color. Cut a few pieces of fabric, lay it out and see if you like the value arrangement. When you get the values right you'll be surprised at how little attention you pay to the colors.

Scrappies are my hands-down favorite! The more fabrics, the better. And they don't ever have to look random or haphazard, unless that's the way you want them to look. You can make any pattern you like into a scrappy.

One of the first quilt books I ever bought was by Judy Martin, The Grand Dame of scrap-quilting, IMHO, before Bonnie Hunter came along: Scraps, Blocks and Quilts. I think that one is out of print, but I now own several of her books. I bet your local library would have some. She is more old-school, but has some really inspiring ideas.

The pink quilt was an attempt to use up all my pink scraps, because "I don't like pink". Turns out, I do. I absolutely love this quilt and refuse to give it away, even though it doesn't really fit my be and originally it was intended for a donation quilt.
