He's single and a diabetic with limited vision and other problems that hit those with the advances of the disease. I wanted to give him something that will comfort him on the rough days.

That is so neat. I am currently working on one just like that using scraps left over from my GD's scrappy drunkard's path on point quilt. I love the concept.

I am new to this, and wondering: Did you QAYG for each of the squares, then add the sashing?
