Default What is this?

My friend found this in a scrap basket of Christmas fabric someone gave her. Does anyone know what it is? It almost looks like a cozy, but the diameter is quite small. Just thought somebody may have made something like this at one time or another. Thanks.

My guess, too. The wings on the right side might be "handles".

Im thinking thread catcher too. the flap fits under the sewing machine and holds the catcher in place in front of the sewing machine.

Here are three views of it. Each side (front and back) looks like the first photo, but it does open up like the third photo shows. Thank you!

Looks a lot like the base square for cathedral window block, although I would not have used a print fabric. Maybe that's why it was in the trash.
