Default Teaching my 5 year old DGD to sew by hand

Here is a quick project I did with my DGD when she was visiting. She really enjoyed working with a needle. It is just plain polyester felt. I had previously made the yo yos. Here's Ruby and her purse.

As you can see, she is quite a ham! I enjoy her thoroughly.

The first time I sewed with my DGD, she was about 7. We hadn't planned on sewing, so I showed her how to do a running stitch by hand with needles, thread and fabric that was on hand at her house. About 6 months later, she asked to sew at my house and I spent a bit of time, setting up the machine for her to try making a simple purse. When she got impatient, I asked did she really want to sew--and she said "Yes, with my hands!" We can sometimes make things very complicated, can't we?

Here's the apron she made with 'my hands' helping her guide the fabric through the machine. She stands in front of me so she can operate the foot pedal. She also handles the presser foot and turns the wheel to lift the needle. Ruby is very good about stopping the machine on a dime on the machine when I tell her to stop. My GK love it when I visit and bring my machine.
