the rag quilt tutorial is simple and with flannel, you don't need batting!

This is a link to the little quilt that got me started making flannel rag quilts of various sizes and themes for my daughter and grandchildren at their requests.

These are a couple I use. The second one has a scalloped edge. I don't always put a center piece in each block, it can make the quilt really heavy. I make a lot of rag quilts out of fleece too, the edges don't "rag" but they still look good. I've also made them with just one block vs. two blocks sewed together for an even lighter quilt.

When it's time to wash/dry the finished flannel quilt, I put it in the dryer and set a timer for 10 minutes. Every 10 minutes I stop the dryer and clean out the lint trap. That way I don't take the chance something will get clogged up.

That was a nice tutorial but I thought you needed to put some batting in the center of each square. How do others do this? A long time ago I started a baby rag quilt but had much smaller squares, wish now I had made them a lot bigger. I think maybe I was trying to use more of my smaller flannel pieces. Note- I still haven't finished that quilt yet, too many other projects popped up that needed doing!

I'm on my 10th rag quilt since I started sewing last September. I've used cotton fabrics for the front and back with a layer of flannel in the middle (acts as batting). Cut my squares 7" and sew 1/2" seams.
