Quilt studio clean out - I may never buy fabric again

And I can make quilts until I die without running out...my 13 year grandson came over to help me clean out my quilt studio (his idea). I have at least 30 UFOs...and enough scraps to keep me sewing for years. To tell the truth, I'm a little embarrassed...I just haven't really cleaned out for a long time....and I now feel like a hoarder! I told Jackson that I was going to start making up and giving quilt kits and fabric to the 2 quilting organizations I belong to. Do you ever feel this way when you're stunned by your excess?

I swore I was going to work strictly out of my stash. Famous last words. I went into Hobby Lobby just to look around & "feel" the fabric. (That sounds sick to me even as I write it. LOL. ). I spotted an absolutely pc. I just could not walk out without so of course I had to look for a cpl. of coordinating fabrics to go with it. So much for good intentions.
I need to find somebody who really cannot afford much to donate some of it to that I know I'll never use.

The last few years I have been buying quilt kits when I find a sale. They are easier to store and everything I need in one package. I may make the pattern of the kit or use a different one. I have a standing cabinet full of quilt kits and slowly using up my stash. I cut a lot of my yardage into scraps pieces to make Bonnie Hunter scrap quilts but I cut the sizes 1/2 size bigger then she does. I keep a good supply of backing, at least 7 yards of each backing fabric. I have my stash down to I can find what I want and still have plenty and of course room to store more.

When I start to feel that way, I make pillow cases. that uses up fabric quickly, and goes to a local private charity that serves foster children. It's a win-win. I also put together 8 - 10 fairly simple charity quilts each year from my stash. That creates a state of mental equilibrium for me. DH has instructions about how to distribute the fabric should I pass to my reward before I use it all up - even though it is extremely unlikely I could ever use it all up in 5 lifetimes!

I am in the process of organizing my sewing space, which I share with a refrigerator, the furnace, a water lift station, and storage of our luggage, etc. Started and now I am painting the walls....didn't plan to do that, just started, throwing out a lot of excess 'garbage' and making some headway will include pictures when done, too embarrassing to do it now!

I've been off work since the first of the year because of rotator cuff surgery; can't afford to buy fabric so I'm using my stash to make a quilt. I'm glad I am because I had forgotten some of the beautiful fabric I have.

I had to give away a lot of my stash when we downsized to a 2 bedroom apt. from a 3 bedroom home where my sewing room was 1/4 of the basement. It's nice to start a project and have the fabric to make it, plus I've been making clothes for my DGD who loves dresses, hope to make her a Princess dress for her 3rd birthday in May, as she loves playing Princess.

I don't feel guilty. I know I'll never use all of this fabric, but my DD has orders to give any that's left to my guild when I pass on. I love to spend time in my sewing room and love the orderly look of fabric stacked on shelves by color. I say we should carry on and enjoy it!!!

I don't have a sewing room, but my fabrics and kits are all in clear plastic tubs some in a closet and some stored in a room. Last week I took out all my tubs and looked through them. I am going to sort between kits, fabrics that are going together for a project with the pattern I put with them, fabrics that go together that have no pattern with them and fabrics that I just bought. I don't have as much fabric as some of my quilting buddies, but I have enough to keep me busy. Now I want to rearrange everything, make better use of my storage bins (some of the smaller bins are almost empty). I have my UFOs put together in one place so I can tackle those. I thought this would be a chore, but actually I am having fun, finding fabrics I bought quite awhile ago, like finding lost friends. And so far, I have not come across any that I regret buying.
