I have tried the sew and fold method for as thin as about a 1/4 inch stem. I sewed on the 1/4 inch seam allowance and once the first side was sewn down, I trimmed the seam allowance down to 1/8 and folded the bias stem over and sewed it down. You can only do this method as small as you can cover the seam allowance with the fold over.

I hated bias bars.!

My preferred method is to heavily starch the fabric before cutting the bias strips, then use a Clover bias tape maker (folds both cut edges towards the middle) and my iron. The strips are sufficiently pliable for me to do anything I want with them while the starch adds stability.

Right now I'm stuck on a quilt because of the stems - can't decide what method I want to use - need to just pick one and do it -- or try a different method on each stem until I find what I want to do!!
