Sounds like those women are just amazed. Give them a chance. As we age we get a little slower but when it comes to experience we got you beat hands down. Seems like a good opportunity to learn from each other...Enjoy your time there with your mom and keep an open mind...

I have been told that I can't possibly make quilts with a treadle sewing machine. The older ladies think I'm a bit batty for even bothering to use a treadle, after all electricity makes a machine better. lol If only treadles weren't so danged bulky and heavy to tote.
You should see the looks when I show them the finished quilts. My current favorite is my 1914 Singer 115 treadle, she sews so nicely.

Some guilds have 'featherweight groups' that meet and bring their machines. You Must have a featherweight to be a member.
I have a FW, but to be honest, I love that my Babylock cuts the thread, has needle up/down, etc. I prefer to sew on it than the FW.
To each his own.........some of the older women [I'm in that group] think things math and working on 'machines' is a mans work.

Also, had to chuckle at your comment about math. My husband and his father (life long farmers/mechanics/carpenters/diyers) will come get me to help them with math - geometry in particular. DH built a tilt bed trailer for his hovercraft and put struts from an SUV lift gate on it. He was asked how many tries it took him to get them in the right position. He said, "One. I asked Mary where they needed to be. She took some measurements, punched numbers in a calculater and told me where to put each end." Math is definitely the "girl" job at our house!!
