Jump into the wayback mahine, way back to the 1950s. My Nana would paint my throat with Iodine when a soar throat started. Does anyone remember this remedy? She used a long swab and got right onto the back of my throat. She was a good Nana.

Timely post I've had a sore throat since last Sunday, went to Dr yesterday and have an antibiotic. Still feel bad going to gargle with either or both ! I'm tired of feeling achy, sore, headache and swallowing!

The iodine post reminded me of something my husband and I were just discussing a week or so ago. Remember having to wait 30 minutes after eating before being allowed to swim?? I think about that now and just shake my head, wondering how that old wives tale got started. I asked my mom what they were thinking back then. She just shrugged and said they thought they were being good moms and dads. Lol.

Besides the warm salt water, my favorite so far, for those who can tolerate them zinc lozenges work really well. Flavored so they can just be sucked for a few minutes until dissolved, they're usually available in grocery and drug stores in the cold remedies section. (Perhaps because I take a daily zinc supplement I cannot use the lozenges; as soon as one hits my tongue I start to gag, which stops as soon as I spit out the lozenge. But my son uses them with no problem, as do several friends.)

In case of an extreme sore throat, I rely on viscous lidocain. It is thick and coats and numbs the throat for a long time. I have had to use it only twice over the last 25 years, but it really does work when nothing else will.

Good remedies. the apple cider vinegar is good. You can also add lemon juice w/honey. both of these are good for every day health. Another to try is Colloidal Silver (can get a good one from Global Light Networks. for Sinuses I use a neti pot. Salt is used for this in warm water. All of these remedies I received from my chiropractor.

this really gives a boost to fighting off stuff. Your gut "flora" is brought back into balance and since I have I.B.S. I think when the colon is off, so is most everything else.
Also, my doctor highly reccommends the old fashioned warm salt water rinse several times a day.
It helps remove the irritating drainage from the back of the throat and it gives a "jar" to the immunes system and kicks it into gear to do it's job.
Don't forget the old: drink LOTS of fluids to keep everything hydrated and working it's best. Under-hydration is like a car not getting enough gas.
Oh yeah, one more thing. For coughs: My grandmother always put a very wet dish towel around our necks to stop coughing. The trick is not to let it get warm.
It absolutely works and when I was pregnant with my first, I was coughing so hard I was spotting! (yikes)...doctor prescribed some cough syrup but remembered grandma's old remedy and it was better than anything!
I had a bowl of cool water near the bed and just refreshed the towel every so often.

I have been in hospital with strep throat and used to get alot of sore throats. I was told to have 1/2 glass warm water and add 10 drops of tea tree oil and gargle with it. Do not swollow. This really works well. I haven't been on antibiotics for my throat in years and used to be on antibiotics at least twice a year. Even if your throat in not infected this works

This method has worked for my daughter and me when we have had nasty, terrible throats:
1/2 tsp ea. salt, lemon juice, peroxide and 1 aspirin for pain: dissolve in warm water and then gargle.
Since then I have added sinus rinse to clear some of the mucus that is dripping down the throat.
    Hope you feel better soon.

Well, to my thinking a sore throat is pain, and what works for pain is Advil or Tylenol. If I need to keep my throat hydrated, I suck a lifesaver, and then I take a pain reliever. Unless it ends up being strep, then you need antibiotics..
