Could it be you have lint in the blade after cutting the material? The lint might get caught just enough.

I don't have an Olfa rotary cutter, so don't know if this applies to your situation.

One of my rotary cutters came with a washer. When I changed the blade in it, I apparently dropped the washer while removing the blade. In other words, I never saw the washer. When I finished putting the new blade in, I had an awful time cutting!

I finally threw the darn rotary cutter out, and bought a new one. When I changed the blade in that one, I saw the washer, and the proverbial 'light went on' about why the other cutter didn't work well.

One last thought...do you have any knicks in the ruler? If you do, the blade could be going into one of them and be knicked by the impact.

If it isn't the mat or the blades or where you are cutting, it could be the cutter itself. Just a thought.

Well...I went to the store, the owner and I reviewed the rulers, the rotary cutter - she took it all apart and checked it, the mat (she washed it and checked it thoroughly), the flannel quilt that started all the trouble, the raw flannel yardage I was using to make the flannel quilt...all of the above was totally fine, no problems that she could find.

HOWEVER...we found bird seed wedged in the flannel, and she thinks this is the culprit. I raise exotic finches, I have numerous large aviaries in my house and I wash towels from the floors of the aviaries in my washing machine. Seeds are often stuck in the washer and what must be happening is that when I prewash the flannel, the seeds are wedging in it. This doesn't happen with regular cotton, but this is my first time using flannel.

I bought a new cutter just to be safe, but the shop owner said my mat and cutter were totally fine. She agreed that all my blades are nicked and then we found the seeds...

So, I am afraid this won't help many other people, but for what it's worth...

The good news is the flannel quilt got lots of praise and I am loving it in the winter by the fire. Most expensive flannel quilt of all time, but at least it's a really nice quilt

I'm so glad you got a satisfying answer. Now I'm eager to see photos of your finches!

Lainey, these birds are gorgeous! I'm glad you're protecting them and giving them as natural a life as possible in captivity. You're doing important work!

I made a jeans and flannel quilt recently. I dulled about five Olfa blades so quickly! The blades cut really well for what seemed go be a very few times. The blaodes got extremely dull very quickly!
