Thank you for all these ideas! I did try what I thought was a maroon, but it turned the block colors closer to a burnt orange tint. Dark brown might be the answer. I never plan ahead, to be honest, but have always "gotten away with it" heretofore. I am sure this will work out somehow, too.

I never plan ahead. Makes life more interesting. I see others have already suggested blacks, browns, whites. Grey's maybe too. Or even a green .. Green to me is a neutral anyway. Mother Nature uses it all the time. Good enough for her good enough for me. LOL

Great sampler! I think I am in the darker sashing category. There is so much distortion between photos and monitors we are probably not seeing the true colors. I think I would audition some of the suggestions for a couple of days to see which one I like. Actually love the idea of on point but you still have the question of what to use for corner blocks and perhaps sashing. Really curious what you decide, be sure and let us know.

I usually don't plan ahead for the sashing and borders on a scrappy quilt. It just seems to make more sense to see what looks good with the blocks after they're made. I liked Karen K's idea, but wanted to see what it would look like with the blocks, so took the liberty of importing the pictures into Windows Paint and putting them together. The other version is just some playing around I did with the program to illustrate how Paint can be useful in planning at this stage. It could be neater, and definitely could have other color choices, but I hope it's okay for illustration purposes. When you want to debut a particular fabric, you can take a picture of it and pick up at least the main color with the eye dropper tool in paint. Your blocks are very nice and will make a great quilt.
