I just tried this quilter's method for making your own spray glue, using flour, water, salt and alcohol. http://californiaquilting.blogspot.c...l-glue-to.html. I just mixed it up, poured it in an empty spray starch bottle and sandwiched the quilt just like you would if you were using school glue. I used this on my Celtic Solstice quilt and it worked great. The layers held together just fine and I had no problems with slippage or puckers. I don't know how well it would hold up if you basted and then left it for a long time, but if I'm going to baste & quilt immediately, I'll definately use this again. No nasty fumes!

I have one more question about this subject. If your batting is bigger than the quilt top and bottom how can you be sure you have them lined up? Do you cut the batting the same size? I asked a quilter that and she thought you should not do that. I am quite new to quilting and know I must be missing some thing.

When I wanted my seam allowances to lie perfectly flat, using Cotton Sateen for a pieced BACKING, I used a small watercolor paintbrush, and diluted the Washable School Glue half and half with water. I brushed on only a tiny bit, about every 4 inches, and gently finger-pressed the seams down. Worked like a charm.
