The sashing/solid material looks blue in the picture and it looks great. You said it was black in what you wrote, and if it really is black, I would not use it. Blue - yes, black - no. I know that often the colors that show up in a picture are inaccurate, so I just wanted to clarify!

Looks like you're off and running!!! You followed the rules - choose a multicolour that you can match out with other colours to form your palette. I now what you mean about the black, but seriously, apart from suggesting a patterned black, what other colour would you use? I like it all and think that the black sets off the dogs really well and you've done a great job. I'm sure the new owners will be thrilled.

I think its time for you to trust your instincts. What you have there is an adorable little quilt. Way to go

I think it looks beautiful. The colors go really good together. I think the black makes all the rest just pop. Love it

LOVE the quilt - I agree with Love 2 Sew, though -- maybe switch the upper right block with the block next to the blue greyhound on the bottom? Just to mix colors up a bit....lovely!!

I agree, I feel the black border takes over and away from your otherwise awesome quilt. Just needs to be toned down a bit.

I LIKE it. I think the sash is about right. You said they weren't sewn yet, so you will loose 1/2 each seam. The final, sewn sash will look great. I think smaller stars in the corners that don't overlap the borders may look better. Whatever you do, it will look great. Don't try to overthink it.
