Never say never! Thanks for all the compliments everyone. This particular quilt was all freehand and some ruler work for the SITD and echo the ditch. I used seam lines for registration points and then used my quilted lines from one area to do the mirror aiming for the previously stitched line. For the feathers in the border I marked a registration line at the midway point and then used a circle template to mark the spine. I then freehand the feather plumes using the drawn line as a guide. In the below picture you can still see my registration marks

In other quilts I certainly use stencils, rulers, templates, premarking and I have also used golden threads paper. It all depends what I am quilting.
