Once again - thank you all for your kindness.For anyone who is interested the design/pattern is called Cirque des cercles by Tracy Horner. It is cross stitched by hand and though I used variegated floss I have seen ones done where the outsides circles were the same colour and the insides of the circles were all shades of one colour. Google images and you will see some beauties.

Thank you- to answer Shorebird, yes it is hand stitched,though I have cross stitched for many years now so practise certainly helps as with most things.
